Image extensions are extensions of Google Search Ads. Advertisers can upload media in order to complement their Google Search Ads.
Image extensions will increase CTR and reduce Invalid clicks.
The reason being that rich visuals are better at capturing the attention of the searcher.
Also, relevant rich visuals will inform the searcher about the content of the landing page and in extent the website.

The images should be clear, comply to the strict image specifications of Google Ads, and be as relevant as possible to the searcher’s intent.
Verticals such as sexual content, alcohol, and gambling aren’t eligible for image extensions.
